Only six weeks after the
loss of the collier Myola another collier, the screw steamer
Tuggerah, foundered off the Sydney coast near Port Hacking.
The 749 ton Tuggerah shipped a heavy sea, capsized and
quickly sank. Only eleven of the crew of seventeen survived.
Captain J. McConachie was among those who drowned.
The Tuggerah was a purpose-built collier owned by the
Wallarah Coal Company. The vessel was built by the Clyde
Shipbuilding & Engineering Company at Glasgow, Scotland in
1912. At the time of loss the ship was on a voyage from
Bulli on the New South Wales south coast and carrying a
cargo of coal bound for Sydney.
The remains of the collier, with part of the hull still
intact, lie on sand in about 46 metres of water.
